Growing Potatoes in Grass Last summer when mowing my lawn my compost bin was full,so I had to pile the grass clippings in a corner of the garden. The next day I decided I would try and use the grass to grow potatoes.I spoke to a friend about it and he thought I was nuts. I started by laying wet newspaper down on the lawn next to the garden.I then laid the potatoes on the newspaper and covered with the grass clippings, which I had spread out to dry for a day. Then each week when I cut the lawn I spread more grass over the potatoes until the grass cover was about 15 inches high.I waited with curiosity to see if any thing would happen. Four weeks later the potatoes were breaking through.The tops of the potatoes grew very large,I was concerned for a while that they were all tops and no potatoes. When I started harvesting, the potatoes were clean and of a good size, and a very high yield. I am now preparing a new bed to do the same again. Rex Linder
